114 Years of Studebaker

The Studebaker Corporation was founded in 1852 in South Bend, Indiana. Studebakers were powered first by courses, then electricity, and finally gasoline. Its 114 years of producing wheeled transportation was bested only in 2017 by the Ford Motor Company.

During the great depression it seemed prudent to offer an affordable high value car. Studebaker named the new car after legendary Notre Dame Football coach (and fellow South Bender) Knute Rockne. They even hired him to promote the new car. But within weeks of the car’s release, the coach was killed in a plane crash. The rockne car was discontinued.
